The Wonderful Rhondda Heritage Park
The Lewis Merthyr Colliery in the Rhondda Valley (known as the "Home of Coal") is where the Rhondda Heritage Park was set up after the closure of many of the mines throughout South Wales. You can follow the footsteps of the miners who once worked in this once thriving coal mine.
Take a guided tour with the specialist guides, who are all retired miners. There isn't anyone that knows the coal industry better than them!
The exclusive Black Gold Experience Underground Guided Tour will take you through the recently developed Trefor & Bertie Engine Houses and through the original lamp room where you can collect your miners’ helmet for the journey underground. You can imagine the banter between the workers at the start and the end of shifts.
The historic Chimney Stack, which dominates our skyline and is something to marvel at, as well as the original Pit-head Wheel and Winding Gear. Check out the Fan House and our two Engine Houses, which were both built in the late 1800s.
At the end of your experience, you can check out the Welsh Gift Shop.
